Condition

Very good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Back side of the mask consistent with age and use. One open crack maybe inherent to the wood on the proper left side. Nicks scratches and small chips in places.

Catalogue Note

Au jeu de courbes tendues définissant l’ovale du visage et les volumes inclinés de la face répond la beauté du décor dessiné par les scarifications.
Selon Elze Bruyninx, à propos d’un masque comparable (Debbaut, Utotombo, 1988, p. 148, n° 60), «  Le tatouage évoque les lianes grâce auxquelles, suivant le mythe de la création, les Dan seraient descendus du monde surnaturel vers le monde terrestre » (idem, p. 275). Le délicat modelé est accentué par la profonde patine brun rouge.
