Good condition overall. Wear consistent with age and use within the culture. Small chips and abrasions in places. A crack the the rear of the base. Beautiful aged patina.

"J'ai toujours été intéressé par la monumentalité de petite échelle. [...] Bien plus qu'une grande dimension, la monumentalité résulte d'une synthèse de la forme. Les miniatures africaines sont aussi formidables que celles provenant d'autres cultures prestigieuses" (Josef Herman in The Antique Collector, septembre 1985, p. 83-85).
Le peintre anglais Josef Herman (1911-2000), sensibilisé à l'art africain par Jacob Epstein, avait constitué une remarquable collection d’œuvres de petite dimension, à laquelle William Fagg consacra deux expositions : Small Sculptures of Africa (1970) et African Sculptures from the Herman Collection (1985). Dans cette miniature de l'ancienne collection Josef Herman convergent magistralement la prégnance et la sensibilité du rare style distinguant la fraction Sundi installée au sud du fleuve Kongo.
