Good condition overall. Marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, small chips and losses consistent with age and use within the culture. Both feet and base lacking.

Catalogue Note
Les charmes minkisi sont rares au sein du vaste corpus de la statuaire Bembe, et celui-ci en constitue, avec l’épaisse gangue croûteuse enveloppant le torse et les signes visibles de sa grande ancienneté, l’un des témoins les plus archaïques. Selon Marc Felix (Art & Kongos, 1995, p. 196) : « Ils doivent être consacrés par un spécialiste investi, le nganga-nkisi, pour être opérationnels. […] Ils assument plusieurs fonctions : ils assurent le succès de la chasse, procurent la fertilité, guérissent de certaines maladies. Ils sont détenus par le nganga mpodi (médecin) qui s’en sert pour des cultes thérapeutiques […]. La majorité des Nkisi sont individuels ou familiaux ».
