Mahmud ibn Ishaq al-Shahabi is a famous calligrapher of the 16th century, and among the best pupils of Mir 'Ali al-Harawi. He was taken to Bukhara by 'Ubaydallah Khan' in 1528. Later he moved to Balkh where he died. His recorded works are dated between 1518 and 1585 (M. Bayani, Ahval va-Asar-e Khoshnevisan, vol.II, Tehran, 1988, pp. 876-880 ; V. Minorsky, Calligraphers and Painters, Washington, 1959, pp. 131-2).
