Catalogue Note

Sadeqi Beg was a painter and director of the library of Shah ‘Abbas I, member of Afshar tribe. Born in Tabriz in AH 940/1533-4 AD and fled to Gilan twenty years later following the murder of his father (I. Stchoukine, Les Peintures des manuscrits de Shah ‘Abbas Ier à la fin des Safavis, Geuthner, Paris, 1964, pp. 76-78 ; A. Welch, Proceeding of the Isfahan Colloquium, Painting and Patronage under Shah Abbas I, Studies of Isfahan: part.II, Renat Hold (ed.), Iranian Studies, vol.VII, p. 472-478). A similar drawing is in the Aga Khan Collection (S.R. Canby, Princes, Poètes & Paladins, musée d'art et d'histoire à Genève, London, 1998, p. 73, no.44), it was first attributed to Reza-i Abbasi (see Sotheby's London, 7 juillet 1980, lot 216), while Welch & Welch attributed it to Sadeqi Beg (see A. Welch & S.C. Welch, Arts of the Islamic Book, The Collection of Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan, Cornell University Press, Ithaca, 1982, pp. 106-107). Another drawing with a seated youth similar to ours without landscape details, attributed to Sadeqi Beg is in Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris (I. Stchoukine, Les Peintures des manuscrits de Shah 'Abbas Ier à la fin des Safavis, Paris, 1964, pl. XXX). There is also another seated youth, by a different hand, in the Reza-i 'Abbasi Museum, Tehran (inv.637), see : A. S. Melikian-Chirvani, Le Chant du monde, L'Art de l'Iran safavide, 1501-1736, coédition musée du louvre/Somogy, Paris, 2007, pp. 292-293.
