Description

  • A Marble Herm Head of Hermes

  • Height 7 1/4 in. 18.4 cm.
inspired by a Greek prototype of the 5th Century B.C., with full beard trimmed in tiers of long voluted curls, parted lips, high cheek-bones, and eyes with drilled inner corners, his hair carefully arranged in two rows of spiral curls over the forehead, bound in a fillet, and falling in unruly overlapping voluted curls over the temples and sides.

Condition

Surface weathered, partially encrusted, beard and nose fragmentary as shown. Repaired horizontally below the nose. Proper left side of the face in the same condition as the proper right side. Top of the head carved flat. Nose was probably restored in plaster.
