Description

  • A Giallo Antico Marble Herm Head of Dionysos
  • Giallo Antico marble
  • Height 7 in. 18 cm.
with full beard, long moustache with ends curving up, parted lips, straight nose, and deep-set eyes, his hair radiating from the crown, brushed up in wavy strands on both sides of the forehead over a broad fillet, and falling in long unruly locks over the ears.

Condition

As shown, note damage to beard and proper left curl adjacent to cheek, hair falling behind that is missing, tip of nose restored in marble, back carved roughly flat, a shallow area missing from crown of head is restored in a plaster-like material, surface worn but some encrustation remains. The color of the stone is less yellow than the catalogue photo suggests.
