Description

  • An Egyptian Wood Ushabti of King Seti I
  • Wood
  • Height from modern base 7 3/4 in. 19.7 cm.
wearing a long tripartite wig, the face finely carved, the five lines of incised inscription including the prenomen and nomen of the king, Men-maat-re and Seti-merien-ptah; remains of black bitumen.

Provenance

from the Tomb of Seti I at Thebes, discovered by Belzoni in 1817, and along with over 700 others and widely dispersed
probably Royal-Athena Galleries, New York, 1980s

Condition

Good and as shown and described; note nose is chipped and worn down, checks, chips, and other flaws in the wood, one with probable ancient fill in back, two large flaws on back of wig and one on side of feet, the ushabti is anchored into its modern wood base, probably by a pin.

Cf. J.-F. and L. Aubert, Statuettes Egyptiennes, Chaouabtis, Ouchebtis, Paris, 1974, nos. 27-29. When Giovanni Belzoni discovered the tomb of Seti I at Thebes in 1817 he found about 700 ushabtis of the king, most in wood like the present example (Aubert,  op.cit.  p. 78).
