Description

  • An Egyptian Polychrome Wood Mummy Mask

  • Height 18 1/2 in. 47 cm.
from the lid of an inner coffin, wearing a broad collar, braided beard with curled tip, and wide striped tripartite wig, the face with full lips rounded at the corners, straight nose, inlaid eyes, and long eyebrows and cosmetic lines inset in bronze.

Condition

As shown. There are areas of retouching, especially on the top of the wig, below the beard, and on the sides of the beard support. Some areas of cracking and flaking on the surface. Probable areas of older surface restorations on the face and especially the cheeks.

For a very similar mask see the coffin of Hor-Ankh in the Dallas Museum of Art (1994.184), the eyes and eyebrows inlaid in obsidian, calcite, and bronze.
