Description

  • A Black Marble Figure of a Lion
  • Granite
  • Length 16 3/4 in. 42.5 cm.
recumbent on a rectangular base with the head turned to his left and long tail curled around to his right side, the thick shaggy mane with incised detail, forepaws grooved, his face naturalistically carved.

Sotheby's, London, English Furniture, Works of Art, and Oriental Rugs and Carpets, May 25th, 1979, no. 121.

Condition

The entire surface appears to have been repolished, particularly heavily on the front legs, paws, and nose, most likely because these extremities were chipped. Minor chips and abrasions on the edges of the base.
