Catalogue Note

Depicted are Hannah Maria (1826–after 1880) and John Pickett (1827–1910), the two eldest children of John (1789–1851) and Joanna Abbot Pickett (1790–1842), around the time the family established a farm in Chester, Rockingham County, New Hampshire, prior to 1835.  The elder John Prickett may have previously engaged in maritime commerce with his father, Captain William Pickett (1754–1822), while the young family resided in Newburyport, Essex County, Massachusetts.  The survival of the amber beads portrayed by the Shutes around young Hannah's neck further suggests this past as they were a gift John Pickett brought back from Cuba for his daughter (box for Amber beads with label inscribed Brought from Cuba c. 1835 By John Pickett to his daughter Hannah Maria).

The painting probably remained with Hannah Maria Pickett throughout her life and was then passed to Josephine Maria Butterfield, her niece, the direct ancestor of the current owner.
