Catalogue Note
Isaiah Thomas (1749-1831) was an American patriot. He fought at the Battles of Concord and Lexington and reported the first account of those battles. He also performed the first public reading of the Declaration of Independence in Worcester, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1770 he began publishing the newspaper Massachusetts Spy and in 1774 the Royal American Magazine. In November 1812, Thomas founded the American Society of Antiquaries, now known as the American Antiquarian Society.
