Catalogue Note
The inscription reads "Robert Branks from his friends in San Francisco Nov. 15th 1852".
The firm Barrett & Sherwood (active 1849-c.1902), founded by Samuel Barrett and Robert Sherwood, produced and imported watches and jewelry, as well as retailed silver and gold objects. They were known to add their retailer's stamp to unmarked pieces. They were pioneers in making gold-quartz jewelry, which they exhibited at the Crystal Palace Exhibition in New York in 1853.
