Canvas is lined. SURFACE: in generally good condition; craquelure throughout (not noticeable; a bit of cupping in places, but looks stable); a small spot of loss at lower left corner (looks white) UNDER ULTRA VIOLET: retouches for frame abrasion along left edge; aside from this, a few small spots of inpainting scattered in sky

Catalogue Note

An old label on the stretcher of the painting reads: "In the Year 1812 - News of the Declaration of War with Great Britain / Scene taken in Orange Co. N.Y., one of the old Dutch Houses of early 18th Century type. In the Distance the Shawangunk Mtns. Old style of Runabout used at the time. Costumes and uniforms of the period."
