Surface generally in good condition. The canvas is lined. Under ultraviolet light: under a thick old varnish; a spot of inpainting in sky to left of sitters face and another, perhaps to address a repaired tear, in lower right 1/4.

Catalogue Note
It is possible that the present work was included in Philadelphia's Great Central Fair of 1864 as The Young Widow. The title would have been derived from the sitter's black mourning attire, a common sight during the final years of the American Civil War.
