Catalogue Note
Although born in Brooklyn, Appel spent most of his life in East Orange, New Jersey. As a young man, he studied under William Merritt Chase and Luis Mora at the New York School of Art and with Frank DuMond at the Art Students League. However, as is evident in the present painting, the greatest influence on his work was George Inness. Appel is known for his subtle, romantic landscapes painted in a Tonalist and Impressionistic style.
