Catalogue Note

Dr. Kenneth Maddox of the Newington-Cropsey Foundation speculates that the scene may well be the Saw Mill River as the artist is known to have painted a number of works of the subject in 1891, some of whose locations are unknown and have the same dimensions as the present painting.  The river would have been within walking distance of the artist's home in Hastings.  It is difficult to confirm this, as the Saw Mill River Parkway has altered the terrain of the area substantially.

According to a New York Times obituary of 1915, Samuel St. John McCutchen was a Yale graduate, well-known lawyer and one time member of the New Jersey State Board of Education.
