Catalogue Note
This painting is a larger version of George Inness' Off the Coast of Cornwall, England painted in 1887, though this composition differs slightly with an expanded foreground and additional figure. Though the work is inscribed 1887, Michael Quick believes the inscription was added by the artist's estate and that the work dates to the 1890s. (M. Quick, George Inness: A Catalogue Raisonné, vol. two, New Brunswick, New Jersey, 2007, p. 210.)
