Condition
The following condition report has been provided by Simon Parkes of Simon Parkes Art Conservation, Inc. 502 East 74th St. New York, NY 212-734-3920, simonparkes@msn.com, an independent restorer who is not an employee of Sotheby's.
This work has been restored. The lining is applied with a non-wax adhesive. The painting is probably clean. The small bright blue marks in the water in the lower right and center right are retouches. It is unclear why they have been applied in such great number, but it may have been an effort to either introduce some brighter color to this area or to diminish some fine cracking and thinness. These kinds of restorations can also be seen in a few spots in the mountains beyond the town. There are also some restorations in the small houses in the upper left and a couple of other spots above these houses in the hill towards the upper left corner. The sky is mostly in very good state, except for possible restoration to soften some cracking in the right sky. Remnants of old varnish can be seen under ultraviolet light in the darkest colors. The retouches should be removed and accurately re-applied only where necessary.
