Catalogue Note
Kensett, born in Cheshire, Connecticut, began his artistic career following in his father's footsteps as an engraver and draftsman. In the late 1830s, he began to work in oils and in 1838 one of his works was accepted into the National Academy of Design Exhibition. He left for Europe in 1840 to study and paint. Returning in 1847, his picturesque landscapes of the Northeast that followed, such as the present work, reflect his exposure to the English countryside and the work of his Hudson River School contemporaries, among them, Asher B. Durand and Thomas Cole.
