McCartan modeled the fountain figure, Nymph Drinking from a Shell, also titled Girl Drinking from a Shell, in 1915.  The life-sized version of the work was exhibited at the Albright Art Gallery in 1916 and again at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art in 1921.  Bronze reductions of the sculpture, of which the present work is an example.
