Catalogue Note
The present work is a study for the painting, A Field, Kelaouen, produced during the artist's six-month stay in Brittany with fellow painter and friend, Henry Kenyon in 1885. The finished painting was accepted by the Paris Salon of 1887 and later exhibited at Dow's first solo exhibition at the J. Eastman Chase Gallery, Boston in early 1888. (Nancy E. Green et al., Arthur Wesley Dow (1857 - 1922): His Art and His Influence, 1999, New York, p. 96 - 97 illustration of the finished painting)
