Catalogue Note

John Hauser was born in Cincinnati where he lived all of his life.  From 1891 to 1908 he travelled extensively throughout the American West to paint American Indians and their environments.  He especially favored the Sioux Indians of Pine Ridge reservation where both of the watercolors were painted.  Hauser and his wife, who lived for months at a time among the Sioux, were given Sioux names and even named their house in Cincinnati “Pine Ridge”.
