According to Dr. Kenneth Maddox, "A description of 'a scene on the Hudson' in the Utica Morning Herald and Daily Gazette, January 2, 1878, allows us identify this canvas as the one sent to the Utica Art Association... The Utica Morning Herald and Daily Gazette, January 17, 1878, felt that the two autumn landscapes which Jasper F. Cropsey sent to the Utica Art Association in 1878 'represent this favorite artist at his best.'"
