Catalogue Note

The extreme stylization of the Type B Lagunillas figures contributed to their characterization as nearly otherworldly entities. The contrasting volumes on this figure of the legs and torso against the pointed shoulders and delicate arms, and the owl-like facial shape, make it a prime example of the "elegant Lagunillas figures, .... among the most highly treasured artifacts from highland Mexico" (Butterwick 2004:35). For a figure formerly in the Land Collection, San Francisco, see Townsend (1998:283, cat. no. 203).
