Catalogue Note

The poses of Kongo power statuary are defined by particular formulas pertaining to their intended use.  In the absence of recorded documentation, it is difficult to establish particular meanings of these positions.  This figure is quite unusual in that the arms are held akimbo, as in many such figures, but the hands are held in a specific diamond formation, with thumbs and forefingers touching, in front of the body.  A hole at the center of this diamond suggests that a metal point was once inserted there. There is evidence of a charge box having been attached to the chest, which was probably mirrored like the eyes, and remains of a magical charge which forms the top of the cap.
