Good condition for an object of this type and age, with significant remains of original charge material as shown in catalogue illustration. Open age crack to proper right side of the head. Front of charge is cracking, crumbling and fragile, with an area of loss exposing some of inner bundle and part of wood figure underneath. Marks, nicks, scratches, abrasions, cracks, small chips and losses consistent with age and use. Small vertical hole through proper right foot. Permanently fixed to modern base.

Teke buti sculptures were invested with ritually-added magical material, or charges, which were packed into recessed cavities in the figures and also built up around the figure, often in a distinctive inverted conical shape which enveloped the torso.  This material served to consecrate and activate these objects towards their supernatural purposes. When these works were collected by Westerners and brought out of Africa, this charge material was most frequently removed; the present figure bears extensive remains of its original charge.
