Description

  • A Namarnde Spirit Making Love with his Two Wives
  • Natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark (eucalyptus tetradonta)
  • 107cm by 49cm
Natural earth pigments on eucalyptus bark

Provenance

Acquired from the artist at Mudjinberri (Mudjinbardi) by Lance Bennett, in 1966
The Thomas Vroom Collection, The Netherlands

Condition

There is a crack in the bark, running longitudinally for approximately 50cm from the top right facing register, strengthened from behind by the adhesion of linen by a professional conservator. There is another crack in the bark, running downwards to the edge from the legs of the central figure. Small scattered losses of pigment throughout but remaining pigments appear stable. There is water damage resulting in discolouration and frayed edges along the lower area of the bark.

Catalogue Note

Lance Bennett’s accompanying documentation reads in part, “The artist has shown a male namarnde spirit with his two wives. He is making love to the adult wife, while the younger wife, ‘promised’ to him at birth and now living with him prior to her pubescence waits.”
