Condition

Overall good condition consistent with age and gentle use. Overall light wear and oxidation to the shades with more concentrated oxidation near the lamp holder mount to the top shade. One dent approximately 1 cm in diameter to the middle shade as is visible in the catalogue. Smaller dents to the top shade which do not detract and convey its interesting historical journey. Presents beautifully overall. Sotheby’s does not guarantee electrical components and suggests having all wiring inspected by a licensed electrician.

Catalogue Note

The offered 'PH3/3' pendant light demonstrates the design of the PH lighting system in its earliest stages of development.  Characterised by a cast iron frame, which supports the lower two shades, this support system affixes directly to the surmounting shade.  Further to this, the cap presents with two hand screws, which can be loosened to adjust the height of the socket and bulb.  In the mid 1920s, light bulbs, and the subsequent filament settings, varied from producer to producer.  If the bulb was placed too high within the shade, there would be unwanted glare, if set too low, the shade would not properly or fully illuminate.  This adjustable setting allowed for the optimal setting to maximize the lighting potential of the design.

Further to this shade's early construction and design within the oeuvre of Henningsen's lighting systems, this lamp is noted for having belonged to Poul Henningsen and was part of the furnishings at his residence first in Copenhagen and subsequently at his farm in Usseroed in 1948.  There it was utilised as an outdoor light on a garage on the property.  After Henningsen's death in 1967, his wife Inger sold the farm in 1970 and purchased two residences in Kokkedal.  There, the lamp descended within the family until purchased by the current vendor.

This lot is sold with a signed letter from Peter Johansen confirming the provenance of this early 'PH3/3' light.
