Catalogue Note
While training in the studio of François Rude, Cain worked in the Jardin des Plantes, where he would sketch live animals in the grand tradition of the animalier sculptors. He made his Salon debut in 1846 and worked on occasion with Pierre-Jules Mêne, who became his father-in-law in 1852.
Lion with an Ostrich was conceived in 1870. The Lion was exhibited in plaster at the 1870 Salon under the title Lion de Nubie et sa proie and purchased by the state for 3,500 francs. The over life-size bronze, cast by Thiebaut, is in the Jardin du Luxembourg. The Susse foundry cast this in three sizes. This appears in the Mêne-Cain catalogue as no.117.
