Catalogue Note

The first edition of this model was created circa 1874. Following the death of the artist, his workshop inventory recorded only three casts which reappeared at the Barye sale in 1876 one of which resides at the Louvre. The post mortem casts by Barbedienne were fantastically successful, so much so that the model was one of Barbedienne's best sellers.
