Condition

The artist's board is even and ensuring a stable support. There are a few small spots of paint flaking around the centre of the lower part of the composition in the green pigments (visible in the catalogue illustration) and some less visible signs of light wear towards the lower-right, however the artist's rich impasto is otherwise well-preserved overall. Under ultra-violet light the varnish fluoresces somewhat unevenly and some of the artist's pigments appear to fluoresce a bright green, however apart form some possible old strokes towards the upper-right corner in the sky, there do not appear to be other notable signs of retouching. This painting is in good overall condition. The colours are somewhat richer, more luminous and less black overall in reality than in the catalogue illustration. Presented in a simple dark grey-painted frame.

Catalogue Note

Painted in Corinth's second period in Munich (1891-1901) while he was living at Giselastraße 7 in Munich’s Schwabing district, View from the Studio Window shows the artist's early exploration of the landscape technique that would come to define his style. The work was bought from Corinth by the painter Benno Becker, a leading figure in the reactionary Munich artists’ society Allotria, founded in 1873 by Franz von Lenbach and Lorenz Gedon and whose number included Friedrich August von Kaulbach, Hans Makart, and Franz von Stuck (see following lot).
