Catalogue Note

As with many notable artists of the late nineteenth century, Charles Maurin’s training began at Paris’ Académie Julian.  In his maturity, Maurin turned to Symbolism, and he exhibited at the Salon de la Roix Croix in 1892.  His experimental works, like Her Guardian Angel, combine a realistic approach to form and figure with the surreal and ethereal in a style also inspired by Japanese printmaking (Maurin was also an accomplished engraver, credited for the revival of woodcuts).  Edgar Degas admired Maurin’s work, and Henri Toulouse-Lautrec was his close friend.
