Catalogue Note

This beautifully carved classicising marble exhibits the attention to detail and polished surfaces which are typical of the work of Pietro Franchi. Active in Carrara during the third quarter of the 19th century, Pietro Franchi was an excellent sculptor. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Carrara, after which, in 1833, he was first recognised for his technical prowess with the work ‘Giulio Cesare s’impossessa dell’erario pubblico’. Throughout his career he copied famous works and created his own fresh compositions.
