- bronze, dark brown patina
Condition
Overall the condition of the bronze is very good with dirt and some wear to the surface consistent with age, including some dark paint and greening on the mouth and several small moisture stains around the base. There is some rubbing to the patina, in particular to the horse's tail, the Amazon's hair and her proper right leg. The spear detaches.

Catalogue Note
Franz von Stuck's Amazon (1897) is often paired with his Wounded Centaur of 1890, which was his first major sculptural work. The Amazon is one of Stuck's best-known works in three dimensions. A life-size cast is at the Villa Stuck in Munich, while another Leyrer cast, such as the present bronze, is in the Nationalgalerie, Berlin (inv.no. B II 122). Stuck won the gold medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle of 1890. He was one of the founding members of the Munich Secession, and taught such notable students as Kandinsky and Klee while at the Munich Academy.
