Catalogue Note

This is a sketch for two of the guardian-maidens on the extreme left of Burne-Jones' late masterpiece The Last Sleep of Arthur in Avalon (Ponce Museum of Art, Puerto Rico) which occupied Burne-Jones for the last thirteen years of his life and came to represent his bid for immortality through his depiction of himself as King Arthur in eternal sleep attended by beautiful women.
