Catalogue Note

The attribution of this panel is based upon its similarity to two paintings by Stanhope inspired by mythology Orpheus and Eurydice on the Banks of the Styx of 1878 and Charon and Psyche of 1883 (collection of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber). The forms of the rocks and trees, the draperies of the figures and the profile of the younger girl are similar and they share a cool colour palette.

We are grateful to Simon Poë of Kirklees Museum for his assistance with the attribution of this lot.
