The portraits are from Thomas Birch's Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain, first published by John and Paul Knapton in 1743-1751. The colour of the plates, which is sometimes muted and dull (see sale in these rooms 13 November 2003, illustration to lot 326), is here bright and vibrant.
