Catalogue Note

A vary rare work on Java with only two complete copies recorded by Bastin and Brommer. Pfyffer zu Neueck, who served in Java between 1819 and 1827, records the geography, topography, costumes, natural history, music, geology and religion of the Javanese people, with fine coloured plates after drawings by Johannes Schiess, and possibly others. Two early editions of this work were published – one uncoloured and this one, with the plates hand-coloured. It was originally available in 4 parts, the first three containing 4 plates each, the fourth 3 plates. A Dutch edition was published in 1838 but without the plates.
