Catalogue Note

An historically interesting album documenting the 'Great Indian Earthquake', which took place on the 12th June 1897. The earthquake caused the greatest damage and destruction in Assam and the region of Shillong. The photographs show damage to St Paul's cathedral and ruins of brick houses in Calcutta, other destroyed houses in Darjeeling, the railway station at Nilphamari (Bangladesh), with huge craters on the platform, a bridge on the verge of collapse at Kaunia railway station. A splendid image of the Cooch Behar palace (Victoria Jubilee Palace) in near ruins surrounded by brick rubble; the magistrate's court at Sylhet, the cemetery at Cherrapunji showing dislodged tombs; the church under rubble at Shillong, Meghalaya, and a collapsed bridge submerged in the river at Gaurhati (Bengal). The photographs overall which rich dark tones.
