Catalogue Note

"A German translation of an extract from El Viagero Universal... [comprising] the four famous chapters on Spanish voyages to Tahiti in the 1770s. Included are accounts of the Spanish frigate Aguila in Tahiti in 1772-1775 and a list of neighbouring islands given to Gayangos by an indigenous informant. An added introduction contains a history and description of Tahiti, its discovery, people and products, largely based on the narratives of Cook, Bougainville, and the two Forsters. Also included is a new map of the Society Islands, drawn by the translator, Friedrich Wilhelm August Bratring" (Hill).
