Catalogue Note
Bishop Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659) had been charged in 1640 by Philip IV with the task of completing the cathedral of Puebla de los Angeles, possibly the finest ecclesiastical building in South America. When Palafox raised tithes to finance its funding he incurred the hostility of the religious orders, especially the Jesuits. Palafox presents the arguments and counter arguments over the entitlement of the church of Puebla de los Angeles to tithes, indirectly attacking the Jesuits for their wealth. This was the first major publication in the controversy between him and the Jesuits.
The book carries no imprint, but Palau gives it as Puebla de los Angeles, 1644. We have not traced it in Medina, La imprenta en la Puebla de los Angeles (1640-1821).
