Catalogue Note

FIRST STATE OF ONE THE MOST IMPORTANT REVOLUTIONARY WAR-ERA DEPICTIONS OF BOSTON, ITS HARBOUR AND HINTERLAND.

This printing is a rare record of Boston as it was at the start of the war, showing the British defences as they were before the siege. Later states record the progress of siege works constructed by the Americans as they encircled the city.

The booklet of sailing directions to accompany the chart is rare (ESTC records only seven locations). The directions were more commonly printed as a single-sheet pasted onto the chart.
