Catalogue Note

Wellsted was a naval surveyor in the service of the East India Company, tasked with surveying the coast of Arabia; in 1835 and 1836 he conducted the first European exploration of Oman, the results published in the Royal Geographical Society's Journal. In recognition of his scientific achievements he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society.
