Catalogue Note
In 1614, Silva y Figueroa embarked on an embassy to Persia in the hope of securing from Shah Abbas a promise of exclusive trading rights for the Spanish in Persia and its dependencies. Of these, Ormuz and Bahrain were considered of particular importance, the former for its trade in silks, the latter for pearls. This lively account of his travels takes in areas as far flung as Goa, Muscat, Yemen, Bahrain, Persia and even Baku.
There seem to be two French editions or issues dating from 1667, one with the imprint of Jean du Puis as here, the other with that of Louis Billaine (see lot 264, sale in these rooms, 11 October 2005).
