Catalogue Note

First collected edition, based on the extremely rare drawings of Turkish life by Peter Coeck printed in 1553 as Mours et fachons de faire des Turcz.

"The Flemish painter Pieter Coecke van Aelst (1502-1550) travelled to Constantinople in 1533-34 with the primary intention of obtaining commissions for the Brussels tapestry company Dermoyen... The ten leaves are composed so as to form seven images, representing seven stages of Coecke's journey to Constantinople" (Koç).
