Description
- [Untitled pack of playing card maps of the Continents: "Jeu de Geographie, ou sont les quatres Parties du Monde". Amsterdam, c.1710], 52 full-page engraved playing cards, 83 x 53mm., contemporary outline colour
- paper
Full-set of the cards, in four suits: Hearts (Europe), Clubs (Americas), Diamonds (Asia) and Spades (Africa), lacking the rule book (as often). Very scarce.
Although the cards are unsigned, they probably originated with Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam, although they are generally attributed to Covens and Mortier as copies of the accompanying rule-book with their imprint are recorded. The earliest "datable" set bear a London tax stamp appropriate for the period 1711-1718 and may well have been sold through David Mortier's (Pieter's brother) shop on the Strand.
