Description

  • Orbis terrarum descriptio duobis planis hemisphaeris comprehe[n]sa. Amsterdam: Johannes Janssonius, 1618, 415 x 565mm., double-page engraved twin-hemispherical world map with allegorical spandrel vignettes, fine dark impression, slight loss at side margins, margins added
  • paper
Rare separate publication, the second state of this extremely decorative world map. “Vividly decorative map" of particular interest as "the rich external decoration is quite new" (Shirley); the borders incorporate allegorical depictions of the four seasons, while larger biblical scenes depict Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden and the Last Judgement.

Nicolas van Geelkercken, one of the lesser-known figures of the highly productive Dutch period at the beginning of the seventeenth century, was active as an engraver, cartographer and publisher in Leiden, Amsterdam and Arnhem. He was later to become the Surveyor of Gelderland. His earliest known work is a world map of 1610. This is an example of his second world map published by Janssonius in Amsterdam, in the second state with the addition of Le Maire's Strait.

Condition

Condition is described in the main body of the cataloguing, where appropriate Lots 23-88. Please note that many cartes-à-figures were larger than the bindings into which they were inserted. As a consequence, frequently a careless binder would crop the borders with loss of engraved area, which has happened to some of the maps described here. These maps were removed from their atlas by the owner to better preserve them; in some cases they have had margins added and centrefolds strengthened, and where loss has occurred they have been restored. A few have been backed on fine linen.
