Catalogue Note

The typhoon which struck Hong Kong, Macao and neighbouring parts of China for around six hours on the night of the 22-23 September 1874, resulted in a terrible loss of life (some 2,000 casualties in Hong Kong and 5,000 in Macao), together with the widespread destruction of property and shipping.

Lai Fong (c.1839-1890), who used 'Afong' as his commercial name, was the pre-eminent nineteenth-century Chinese photographer, who had worked in Hong Kong from at least 1870 (see Bennett).
