Description

  • Ogilby, John
  • America: being the latest, and most accurate description of the New World. London: Printed by the author, 1671
  • paper
First edition in English, folio (410 x 265mm.), engraved additional pictorial title, printed title in red and black, folding general map, 50 double-page plates and maps, 6 full-page engraved portraits and 66 engraved illustrations in the text, contemporary calf, a few maps with small tears, Arx Carolina plate (possibly from another copy) mounted to size, map of Virginia and Florida strengthened at fold, lower margin added to size, map of Virginia with manuscript additions in ink to title, binding rebacked and repaired

Ogilby's text is in part a translation of Montanus's De Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld, but with considerable additions from other and more reliable sources in respect of New England and New France, Maryland and Virginia, using for the most part English materials. Ogilby also has a short section on "New Netherland, now call'd New York", which gives the account of the transfer of sovereignty from the Netherlands to England in 1664. The work was considered as the second volume in Ogilby's projected "English Atlas" series, and is perhaps his best known geographical book after his Britannia road atlas which first appeared in 1675.
